4 pest prevention products every dog owner should have

Your house may be riddled with chew toys and dog beds, but you also should have a decent lineup of flea and tick control products. Pest prevention is a year-round procedure, so you should never be without these items!

From drops to collars, outdoor sprays to home foggers, there's a number of preventive procedures you can take to protect you and your pet against the health risks posed by fleas and ticks. These bloodsuckers don't just feed off dogs, they're just as happy to use you or other household members as hosts.

1. Have pre-treatments
Give your dog the best protection against pests with preventive treatments. Take him to the vet for a Lyme disease immunization shot, but know that no vaccinations are 100 percent, so consider other products, such as the Hartz® UltraGuard Pro® Flea and Tick Drops for Dogs and Puppies, which will kill any pests that are currently on your pet and protect him against further infestations for a month. These come in different dosages, depending on your dog's size. If you have other pets, make sure the specifications apply to them before administering the drops. Medications for dogs should not be used on cats and dogs of another size shouldn't share these products.

2. Consider collars
Provide further protection for your dog with a flea and tick collar, which he can wear whenever you venture outdoors for a walk. Hartz carries ones with Reflect-X Shields that focus the pesticide on your pet and away from you, ensuring your safety and his.

3. Be ready for a bath
You never know when your four-legged companion may come across pests or when you'll discover them. So have flea and tick shampoo on-hand. This way, if you find an infestation in the middle of the night, you won't have to worry about finding a 24-hour vet or pet store.

4. Know about post-treatments
Though you may not need to have these products at home, know the products that will treat your home after an infestation. Post-treatments include foggers and yard sprays. After you've treated your pet, vacuum the home thoroughly, then acquire these items the following day, as necessary.
