Fleas and ticks, especially in the southern region of the country, have always been a present danger to pets and home life. However, it's not every day when a flea infestation plagues an entire school. This is exactly what happened in Golden Meadows, La., though.
Golden Meadows Middle School had to close temporarily and cancel all school-related activities after an influx of students began showing flea bites more than a month ago. Houma Today reported that exterminators have treated the building more than six times, but the bites aren't disappearing. Principal Tim Long has insisted the problem isn't serious enough to keep students out of school, but some parents have been keeping their kids home anyway.
This could be a smart move on the parents' part, as fleas attached to a child's body could easily travel from the classroom to the home at the end of the school day. This could cause yet another flea infestation inside the home. Female fleas start producing eggs within 24 to 48 hours after their first blood meal and can lay up to 40 to 50 eggs per day. So, if the homeowner isn't careful, just a few fleas brought home from school could result in a situation beyond control.
It's also important to remember that while fleas are simply an annoyance to humans, it could be dire for dogs and cats. A flea infestation for your dog or cat could result in severe itching, which can lead to a skin infection and the development of anemia due to large amounts of blood loss.
Simply making sure your home is clean and taking caution around surfaces your pet often lies on can help fight the risk of flea infestation. Vacuuming and cleaning or destroying the pet's bedding are necessary steps if you suspect your home has been exposed to fleas. But, sometimes, especially troubling flea attacks require tougher actions. There are many products that can protect your home if a situation like the one in Golden Meadows ever occurs. For example, the Hartz® UltraGuard Plus® Flea & Tick Carpet Powder kills fleas for up to 30 days and prevents reinfestation for up to a year.
