Fleas are known to be a disturbance to homes and pets, but sometimes they can affect people in places away from home. A pre-school center was recently shut down due to an influx of the parasites, and flea control measures are now being implemented.
The Thelma B. Johnson Early Learning Center, of Henderson, Ky., was temporarily closed, and is being treated this week for flea infestation problems, according to a story published recently by the Tristate Homepage. Weeks earlier, the teachers had noticed bite marks on students' arms, and sprayed the area. The following week, more bite marks were identified, compelling the staff to take extra precaution.
"It was actually two classrooms that was the concern," Danielle Crafton, of the Henderson County School System, told the source. "By eliminating people from the building besides people that are cleaning, but know the steps, and know where to look, and what to take, we hope that the fleas just die."
Flea prevention at home
Though the source didn't posit a reason for the infestation, fleas have been known to live and reproduce on humans. Fleas are parasites that feed off the blood of their hosts in order to stay alive, and a female flea, usually larger than the male, can consume up to 15 times its own body weight in blood. Though they are an annoyance to humans, to pets they have the potential to be very dangerous. Too much blood loss from flea bites could lead to a pet developing anemia, and tapeworms and severe itching are also serious ailments pets could come down with.
In order to prevent the spread of fleas in the home, it is important for pet owners to take precaution. By properly grooming animals daily, people can be on alert. Flea collars will often keep fleas away for months at a time, and there are sprays available that will kill and repel these parasites and others. Another sure way to dispose of ticks is to apply repellant drops directly on animals' fur. Products like Hartz® UltraGuard Pro® Flea & Tick Drops for Cats kill fleas as well as their egg larvae, safeguarding pets and the home from future infestations.
