Hartz® experts list 3 key items to include in your first aid kit

Whether you own a cat or dog, you know how critical it is to stay on top of animal wellness. Everything from flea and tick control to veterinary visits are necessary to ensure that pets are healthy and happy. However, there are other preventative measures that you may be able to take to give yourself additional peace of mind.

How many times have you needed to treat a pet injury without the proper supplies on hand? Even tick removal can come with blood on the skin of an animal, stressing the importance of having medical resources on hand for the situation. While you might think that a first aid kit is only beneficial to humans, it can do a world of good for animals as well. If you're interested in creating a kit to keep your pets safe and healthy, here are some items you may want to include.

1. Flea comb
Fleas and ticks can be just as big of a health hazard to animals as any cut or bruise. That being said, you may want to include an item such as the Hartz® Groomer's Best® Flea Comb for Dogs in your first aid kit. Fleas might not be a problem that needs immediate medical attention, but they should be taken care of as soon as possible to prevent an infestation. Having a comb ready in your first aid kit can be immensely helpful.

2. Muzzle
If your pet is in pain, it's likely going to be squirming around a bit and trying to avoid you as you attempt to provide treatment. To make the situation more manageable, the Red Cross recommends having a muzzle in your first aid kit. This can prevent any nipping by your pet as you try to treat the wound. Placing a muzzle on the animal may also encourage it to be more calm.

3. Clean towels and cloths
Depending on the nature of the situation, you may want to have clean towels and unused rags on hand to treat an injury, especially if there is bleeding. This can help you keep the wound from becoming worse until you reach a medical expert.
