How can I tell if my dog has fleas?

It can be hard to tell if your dog has fleas.

It can be hard to tell if your dog has fleas. Fleas are tiny insects, usually less than two millimeters long, according to Banfield Pet Hospital, and can easily hide in your dog's fur.

If you think your pet might have fleas, find out for sure by searching through it's coat with a flea comb, or a brush with very fine teeth. If you find small black specks in your dog's fur, chances are it has fleas. These specks are called "flea dirt," and they are dried pieces of blood that fleas have already digested from your dog. You can be extra cautious by adding water to them.  If they turn red against a white paper towel, they are definitely from fleas.

If you discover your pet does have fleas, Hartz has the products you need to treat your pup and rid it of pests, like Hartz® First Defense™ Flea and Tick Topical Treatment for Dogs which provides fast and effective treatment and prevents re-infestation for one month.
