Fleas have been irritating animals and humans alike for thousands of years. In fact, researcher André Nel of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris told LiveScience that the oldest fleas might have lived as many as 250 million years ago. Fleas that lived that long ago were much different than the fleas we know now. The oldest flea fossils found have bodies that are as long as two centimeters, which is five to ten times larger than the fleas that infest our pets today. LiveScience suggested that these much bigger, ancient fleas might even have fed on the blood of dinosaurs.
Scientists like Dr. Katharina Dittmar of the State University of New York at Buffalo think differently. Dittmar recently published an article in which she stated that there isn't enough evidence to conclude that fleas were parasites on dinosaurs.
Even so, fleas have had a long history as parasites and are certainly living on and annoying some of our pets today. Thankfully, flea control is very accessible now a days, and Hartz flea provides helpful products like Hartz® UltraGuard® Rid Flea & Tick™ Shampoo for Dogs, which will effectively clean your pup and kill any fleas that may be lingering from the Jurassic Period.
