Texas pet owners seeing flea populations boom

Because summer has yet to arrive, many pet owners have put off their flea and tick control routines until the warm weather rolls in. However, more experts are seeing the negative impact of this trend and how it's affecting animal wellness each time they deal with an infestation. Veterinarians in Texas are just some of the many professionals who are concerned about the lack of parasite control in their region, according to The Brownsville Herald.

"We see a lot of fleas this time of year every year," Glenn Head, a veterinarian at Boca Chica Animal Hospital, told the news source. "They're bad every year."

However, he isn't the only one who's seeing what's happening to those in the pet community. Michael Van Burklio, a dog store pet owner, claims that he examines severe cases of fleas on a daily basis. Because he works closely with animals, by grooming and bathing them, he notices the impact these parasites are having on their pets' health. As soon as he dips infested pets into water, Burklio sees the liquid turn red as a result of the blood from the fleas.

Parasites in Texas
Genaro Lopez, a retired biology professor, claims that the weather has been ideal for parasites to thrive. The climate is naturally warm and the atmosphere has been dry, which makes it perfect for fleas and ticks trying to survive.

"It's like a perfect storm: all these hosts, warm weather, dry weather," Lopez told the news source. "When it's dusty, that's their number one habitat."

In general, Pet MD claims that fleas and ticks flock toward warm temperatures where they can survive without a problem.

However, pet parents in Texas don't have to wait for an infestation to occur, and neither do cat and dog owners in other regions where parasites are running rampant. Products such as the Hartz® UltraGuard Plus® Flea & Tick Collar for Cats and Kittens can keep fleas, ticks and mosquitoes away for up to seven months. Similar products are available for dogs, and topical drops can provide the same protection for a maximum of 30 days.

There are many options for pet owners who are constantly fighting parasites. Best of all, these products are easy to find and can keep an infestation from occurring, regardless of the time of year and the weather.
