The dangers of fleas on cats

Fleas pose a real threat to a cat's health

Flea removal can be a pain inside your home and on your cat. It's a necessary burden, though. Left untreated, a flea infestation can result in serious consequences to your cat's health. Optimum conditions for fleas is around 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so even if it's cold outside, your warm living room is still a flea-friendly environment. In just 30 days, only 10 female fleas can multiply into more than 250,000 new fleas.

One of the main effects fleas can have on your cat (the itching) is the result of flea allergy dermatitis, which is very common in cats and the most common skin disease reported in pets. Flea saliva is suspected to be the cause of the allergy. Cats tend to develop the allergy at a young age.

Flea allergy dermatitis, also known as flea bite hypersensitivity, causes severe itching, and can arise from just two flea bites. Constant scratching can cause your cat's skin to become infected.

Other harmful effects fleas could inflict on your cat include tapeworms and anemia as a result of blood loss.

Rid your home of fleas
Once you see that your animal has been subjected to a flea infestation, it's important to clean your home so the rest of the environment doesn't fall victim to an onslaught of fleas. Clean your carpeting and bedding thoroughly, and clean or throw out any bedding your pet commonly spends time on. There are also products designed to rid your home of fleas effectively. The Hartz® UltraGuard Plus® Flea & Tick Carpet Powder kills fleas for up to 30 days and prevents reinfestation for up to one year.

Proper flea removal on your pet
To look for fleas, a fine-toothed comb can be used to find the small pests in your cat's fur. If your cat doesn't go outside, that doesn't mean it can't find itself victim to a flea infestation. Similarly, if you don't see fleas jumping on your cat, that doesn't mean they're not there. It's important to check your cat regularly for fleas, so if there's a problem you're able to catch it before it gets out of hand.

Once you've spotted fleas, using a product like flea removal shampoo can quickly alleviate the problem.
